eFuels or synthetic fuels

eFuels, also known as electrofuels or synthetic fuels, are synthetised fuels made from green hydrogen, i.e. renewable hydrogen. If containing carbon, it is sourced from captured carbon monoxide or dioxide, so that any carbon oxide release during combustion approximately balances carbon consumption for production, ensuring a restricted carbon footprint.

The objective of eFuels is to provide a cleaner alternative to crude-based fuels for internal combustion engines. The synthesis process can be tailored towards various types of existing fuels and made them drop-in within existing crude-based fuels, hence the sub-categories of eGasoline, eKerosene or eDiesel covering the distinct needs of cars, trucks, trains, ships, or airplanes.
